Thermax partnered with Nanostuffs to modernize its field service operations by implementing Salesforce Field Service Lightning (FSL) as the core platform for managing field inspections, technician workflows, and service execution. To address limited network connectivity at customer sites, Nanostuffs extended Salesforce with a custom offline inspection framework built using Lightning Web Components, enabling technicians to complete Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) inspections seamlessly while providing managers with real-time visibility into field operations.

The Hard Problem

Building a Reliable Offline Inspection Platform Without Compromising Data Integrity

Thermax's field engineers frequently perform inspections at customer sites where internet connectivity is unreliable or completely unavailable. A single inspection can span multiple assets, hundreds of checklist responses, photographs, and technician observations. The challenge was not simply allowing inspections to continue offline—it was ensuring that every response remained accurate, recoverable, and synchronized correctly once connectivity was restored, even after technicians had been offline for extended periods.

The obvious solution was to use the browser's Local Storage for temporarily saving inspection responses. While suitable for small amounts of data, Local Storage presented several limitations for an enterprise field service application. It stores information as serialized strings with limited storage capacity, making updates inefficient as inspection size grows. It also provides no transaction support, structured querying, or reliable mechanisms for handling interrupted synchronizations, duplicate submissions, or multiple inspections running simultaneously. These limitations increased the risk of inconsistent or incomplete inspection data.

The solution wasn't simply storing data offline—it was designing an offline-first inspection architecture that treated synchronization, data integrity, and scalability as core design principles rather than afterthoughts.

Nanostuffs implemented an IndexedDB-based offline persistence layer integrated with Salesforce Field Service Lightning and Lightning Web Components. Instead of storing an entire inspection as a single object, each inspection response was saved as a structured record linked to the Service Appointment, Asset, Unit, and Question. When connectivity became available, the synchronization engine validated pending records, identified incremental changes, prevented duplicate submissions, and synchronized only unsent responses back to Salesforce. This architecture enabled technicians to continue inspections without interruption while ensuring accurate, secure, and consistent data across the entire field service lifecycle.

The Approach

How we delivered it

Rather than replacing Thermax's field operations in a single rollout, we delivered the solution in controlled phases. Each phase validated real-world technician workflows before expanding the implementation, reducing deployment risk while ensuring the solution could operate reliably in demanding industrial environments.

Field Process Discovery

We worked closely with Thermax's service managers, field engineers, and business users to study how inspections were actually performed across customer sites. This included analysing SOP documents, technician responsibilities, approval workflows, asset inspection sequences, and situations where unreliable network connectivity interrupted daily operations. These findings became the foundation for the Salesforce Field Service solution.

Piloting the Offline Inspection Framework

Before enterprise deployment, we built and validated a pilot covering configurable inspection forms, role-based technician workflows, offline data capture, synchronization, and mobile usability. The pilot was executed with representative inspection scenarios to verify application performance, data integrity, and user experience before rolling out to production users.

Production Rollout & User Enablement

Following successful pilot validation, the solution was deployed on Salesforce Field Service with Lightning Web Components for field teams. User roles, inspection templates, SOP configurations, and access controls were configured to support daily operations. Hands-on training sessions helped technicians and supervisors transition from manual inspection processes to a standardized digital workflow.

Continuous Enhancement & Scalability

After go-live, the platform continued to evolve based on operational feedback. Enhancements focused on improving offline synchronization, optimizing application performance, simplifying inspection configuration through metadata, and extending the solution to support new inspection types and evolving business requirements without significant redevelopment.
